THE FANTASTIC PIERRE ET GILLES

Alluring. Provocative. Whimsical. Iconic. There are not enough adjectives in the English language to describe the impression that one gets while viewing the work of Pierre et Gilles. I have been a fan and follower since the day I picked up my camera. When I saw their book in a book store, I could not put it down. I would study each page as if I were taking notes and trying to figure out some magnificent secret. This was long before the day of digital photography and Photoshop. These creations were imaginative and otherworldly to me. I think that I spent two hours in the book store drinking in every page of this compelling book. I have long since been a fan and admirer of the talents these two posses. -Justin

French artists and Romantic partners.

Pierre was born in La Roche-sur-Yon in 1950, Gilles in Le Havre in 1953. At the beginning of the 1970s, Gilles graduated from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Le Havre, while Pierre was studying photography in Geneva. In 1974, Gilles corresponded for a year with Annette Messager. He settled in Paris, did paintings and collages, collected Photomatons and did illustrations for magazines and advertising. After service in the army in 1973, Pierre began working in Paris as a photographer for the magazines Rock & Folk, Dépêche Mode and Interview.

In autumn 1976, Pierre and Gilles met at the opening of the Kenzo boutique in Paris and started living together. Their apartment/studio was in rue des Blancs-Manteaux, Paris. As from 1977, it became clear that they should work in collaboration. Pierre will shoot and Gilles paint, each one working on the other works. Their work for the publication Façade brought them to the attention of the public.

The cosmos of the worldwide renowned French artist duo is a vivid, colorful world poised between baroque sumptuousness and earthly limbo. Pierre et Gilles create unique hand-painted photographic portraits of film icons, sailors and princes, saints and sinners, of mythological figures and unknowns alike. Pierre et Gilles pursue their own, stunningly unique vision of an enchanted world spanning fairytale paradises and abyssal depths, quoting from popular visual languages and history of art. Again and again, they re-envision their personal dream of reality anew in consummate aesthetic perfection.

Pierre et Gilles are among the most influential artists of our time. In their complex, multilayered images, they quote from art history, transgress traditional moral codes, and experiment adeptly with social clichés. Their painterly photographic masterpieces exert an intense visual power that leaves the viewer spellbound.

Over the last thirty years, Pierre et Gilles have created photographic portraits of numerous celebrities including Marc Almond, Mirelle Mathieu, Catherine Deneuve, Serge Gainsbourg, Iggy Pop, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Nina Hagen, Madonna, and Paloma Picasso. They work almost exclusively in an opulently furnished studio, where their subjects are costumed lavishly and placed before three-dimensional backgrounds. Pierre photographs the model, and Gilles retouches and hand-colors the print. The reproducible portrait is rendered unique through painting, which highlights each detail with carefully selected materials and accessories.

The ‘sulphur loveliness’ of fashion photography and advertising is where this art comes from, and where it belongs: amid exclusive shopping, outrageous price tags and very private parties that are the embodiment of social status. Here, perfection is not terrible but beautiful, yearned for and everlasting. Pierre & Gilles are part of a global glitterati who serve up happiness as exquisite corn and battered clich’. The stagnant male studs in Pierre & Gilles’ blended ideals certainly don’t sweat. Even vomit is portrayed as scentless, precious diamonds (L’escale, petit matin, 2003). In an erotic image of 1996, a naked man has his head and torso ‘splattered by the photo stylist’s equivalent of semen’. Gilles explains: ‘Johnny was originally meant to be a beautiful young thug, but he turned into something more vulnerable. It’s fake cum, just something we concocted. I think we used shampoo’.

Why is this schmaltzy kitsch so popular? Pierre Ardenne suggests that the ‘niceness’ of Pierre & Gilles has something to do with it. ‘The definition of the French equivalent, gentillesse… fits the work of Pierre et Gilles like a glove’: that which pleases by the familiar grace of its forms, its appearance, its manners.

Today their portraits have become a camp trademark and are as true to reality as Astro-Turf is to grass. The flagrant oblivion of Pierre & Gilles towards any awkward realities of history and culture does have a Ship-of-Fools quality to it. Also, their oeuvre, redolent with recycled popular icons, cute heroes and fantasized ideals, has a nightmarish undertone. Nevertheless, their portraits are immensely popular and any star worthy of Paris Match wants to be in one. Celebrities need to be talked about, spied on, yearned over. They are locked into the sadistic ratings game of fame. So they flock and befriend Pierre & Gilles

“BEAUTIFUL STRANGERS” – EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THE MASTERS BEHIND BEAUTIFUL MAG

Posted in Covers, Fun Stuff, Interview, Men, MODELS, Monroe-land Mag, Porn star, Tear Sheets, XXX with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 29, 2012 by monroeland

Justin Monroe sits down with the men behind BeautifulMag in an up close and personal interview.

JM: Tell us a little bit about the history of BeautifulMag? How did it all begin?

BM: We started BeautifulMag in 2005 when blogging was still relatively new. It was quite exciting to have a way to build a website platform allowing you to update it easily and frequently; sharing your thoughts with the rest of the world. Thinking about it, it is almost a bit exhibitionistic. We soon realized that, if we wanted to make a difference, we needed to find a niche. At this time most blogs were dealing with only two subjects: personal glorification of the blogger or porn. We wanted to be different. We wanted this thing to be a real contribution. We wanted BeautifulMag to be a window allowing gay artists to display their work and their artistic vision, knowing that for them it was – and sometimes still is – very difficult to get recognition. In contrary to many other blogs and sites we consciously decided to create an editorial page, meaning not only showing images, but also actually talking about them. Over the years BeautifulMag has grown into an authority in its field.

JM: Who are the men behind the blog? What is your personal connection with homoerotic photography?

BM: Mind you, as big as BeautifulMag has become over the years, for us it is still a side activity. We are just 2 guys with daytime jobs and BeautifulMag is a hobby and a passion. We aren’t photographers and don’t aspire to be, even though we are working in this creative industry. Regarding our connection with homoerotic photography, let’s just say, we love men and we love great photography. However, BeautifulMag is about more than just that. First, it is not all about homoerotic; it is mostly about the beauty of men. Second, we do think that we have an obligation to share that beauty in all its glory. We have been accused of being pornographic and its true that there is a thin line in what is acceptable and what is not. We like to push the boundaries a bit, showing that men are sexual, beautiful and yes, erotic.

JM: What is your vision and goal for BeautifulMag.com?

BM: Our vision is to share the beauty of male art with the rest of the world. To create understanding and respect of the male form as a sexually beautiful being. Since BeautifulMag is not our source of income, we take it as it comes though we do some objectives. It needs to be relevant; meaning it needs to be entertaining and fill the desires for both artists and readers. However, the most important thing is that it needs to be fun! As long as we enjoy doing this together with the amazing talents we work with, we’ll keep going. It also allows us to actively sponsor artists, gay events and charitable foundations such as AIDS/HIV education. As I mentioned earlier, we like to see BeautifulMag as our little contribution to the world and if this means that through our site we been able to open some people’s mind towards homosexuality, male beauty and AIDS prevention; I’d say we reached our overall vision and goal.

JM: What has been your biggest life challenge? And biggest triumph?

BM: That’s a really tough question. I think there are many answers possible here. Accepting our sexuality was a challenge, with coming out to be a triumph. Building a strong and solid relationship and having succeeded in doing so. Personally, I’d like to say that I also overcame my fear of heights (to a certain degree), which is quite an accomplishment. There are still many mountains to climb though, no pun intended. I’m planning to have a talk with my boss this week regarding my salary. That is quite a challenge and I’m not sure if I will triumph. Going to the gym and finally seeing some change… yeah, that is quite a win as well J. Oh and yes, we are thinking about a second book publication. Our first one, BeautifulVision was a challenge, but we were very happy with the outcome.

JM: You guys have always supported my photography and been instrumental in my success over the years. I would personally like to thank and acknowledge you for doing so. Is there anyone out there you would like to thank and why?

BM: We’d like to thank all those wonderful artists who submit their work freely and enthusiastically. We’d also like to thank all the loyal visitors and readers we have gathered over the years. I know, it sounds a bit cheesy, but even though we do it for all you guys; we couldn’t do it without you.

JM: Who are your favorite artists in music, fashion or art? Why do they inspire you?

BM: Tough question. We don’t really have a real idol. I think it would be easy to name the obvious: Andy Warhol, Madonna and Yves Saint Laurent. Yet, there are many people who aren’t that famous and still inspire us. Our good friend Eduardo Suner, the man behind the fashion brand ES Collection is a great example. He came with a revolutionary innovation for underwear and swimwear. Though he was initially laughed at, he believed in what he wanted to do, didn’t give up and built a brand in a period of just a few years, which is now a major player in the industry. It is that thinking, that courage and that determination that inspires us.

JM: Do you like smooth or hairy men?

BM: Both of us we have always been attracted to smooth men, but we have come to discover that body hair is quite a turn on as well. We do like it cultivated though. There is something exciting about a nice groomed chest or a perfectly trimmed beard. I think the attraction is not so much related to hair or no hair, but more to the total picture of the guy. Tattoos are a big turn on as well. I know they have nothing to do with hair or no hair, but it kind of relates to the same thing. I’m always a bit surprised to see the negative comments we receive whenever we show a beautiful inked guy on BeautifulMag. Let me suffice by saying that men are hot, sexual beings and we just love them. So bring them on.

JM: What is your guilty pleasure?

BM: See the answer above. Besides that watching TV on the couch with a bowl of ice cream.

JM: If you were an animal what would you be and why?

BM: I’m going to go with a dog. Yes, definitely a dog. I LOVE dogs! In fact I love dogs so much that I have been accused of actually showing some dog-like behavior patterns, which by the way doesn’t include peeing in public or humping strangers (though that last one could happen occasionally).

JM: How long has BeautifulMag been around? And what have some of the challenges been?

BM: We started BeautifulMag in 2005. During these 7 years we have faced several challenges. As I said earlier, the creation of our anthology book was quite an exciting one. Also, the production of The Prophecy, one of BeautifulMag’s biggest accomplishments when it comes to sharing male art with the rest of the world. However, if we have to narrow it down, I think I can say that the biggest challenge has been and continues to be sticking to our believes and to keep going. We believe that men are desirable so we keep fighting to voice this believe by keeping BeautifulMag going, even in the face of strong criticism and threats. This has been our biggest challenge.

JM: Do you experience issues with censorship? If so how do you deal with it?

BM: You would be shocked to see some of the emails and comments we receive. Sometimes we feel, that whatever we do, we will be judged for it. Whether it is showing tattoos, hair, no hair, a smoking model, aggression, ass and dicks. Criticism easily finds its way into our mailbox and comes from every corner of society. We moderate our publications, but we do not believe in censorship. The most shocking is to see how narrow minded certain fellow gay men are. I have to admit, in the early years it was quite difficult to deal with this. Though over the years we have come to realize that those who love what we present outweigh those who have moral or religious issues. Now, those comments are only a drive to keep going and push harder. The only censorship we do believe in is moderation of the comment section on our site. We allow people to give their opinion, but draw a line where it comes to hatred and discriminating messages towards the artists we work with.

JM: What does it take to be a BeautifulMag cover boy?

BM: I wish I could say that it depends on how much pleasure they can give us, but that would be wrong, wouldn’t it? LOL. It is very hard to choose a cover. We see so many gorgeous men and just as many talented photographers. More often than not we have to decline request for cover positions. There are only so many covers we can fill during the year and they usually are booked months in advance. What we strive for is impact, originality and a healthy dose of sex appeal. Since most of the submissions we receive answer all three criteria, the choice doesn’t get easier. We do about 26 covers a year so all I can say to those who really want the place, but haven’t been able to get it yet is to not give up.

JM: What is your favorite quote of all time?

BM: Having sex is like playing bridge. If you don’t have a good partner, you better have a good hand (Woody Allen)

DONATO STYLE – INTERVIEW WITH DESIGNER DONATO CROWLEY

Posted in Interview, Men, MODELS, Monroe-land Mag, Promotion with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 26, 2012 by monroeland

In one’s lifetime you meet someone that completely blows you away. For me, Donato Crowley is a mind blower, his designs are so unique and glamorized I felt like I should share them with all of you Monroe-land followers.

I recently caught up with him for a brief chat and to see what is new in that twisted mind of his. I wanted to ask him a couple simple questions that might give us more insight into this man’s incredible imagination.

J.M. Why the gas masks? What do they represent to you?

Hello to the studly Justin Monroe. First of all, I want to say I love your sexy and inspiring work, you are so incredibly talented!

Hmmmm…Why the gas masks? That is a funny story. I was shopping with my mom. Yes, I am a bit of a mama’s boy, but if you ever get a chance to meet her, you’ll be her boy too. Anyway, I saw a bunch of gas masks and I said to Mum, “Those are so cool! I’m gonna buy a few.” She looked at me both shocked and confused and slight scared. In that instant, I had to have them.  This is exactly what I love about these iconic pieces; they elicit so many different feelings to different individuals.  Some fear apocalyptic glimpses, for others it is protection and war, some are sexually aroused, and then there are those that it triggers them to smoke a bowl. I just saw an empty canvas and started to paint, sculpt and glam to death. From the first design of my Gas Mask collection, they have been very well received.

J.M. What are you currently working on and where can we see more?

Since the Gas Mask collection, I’ve created a couture top hat collection that is not for the faint of heart. An armored collection, including war crowns and Swarovski crystallized Knight’s helmet, soon to be featured by Katy Perry in L’Uomo Vogue, I am also designing custom pieces for Justin Monroe’s Photo Exhibit called “Pompous”. Little Wayne has recently been featured in my Hannibal Lecter Half Mask Collection. All of my art and designs are available at www.DonatoStyle.com.

J.M. What advise would you give to a new and struggling designer or artist?

The advice I would give to a new or struggling artist is to design for you. It is not a selfish thing. It is self-preserving.

Trust in the gifts that this very precise universe has given you. They are specially designed for you and only and you.

However, they are not meant for you to keep to yourself. It would be poison for you to not live up to that universal responsibility.  Everyday you must create, look at something inspiring, surround yourselves with people living up to their potential, and make sure that you return the inspiration to those who seek. I believe that through our very own creations, we come to know ourselves deeply and profoundly.

Oh yeah…and don’t forget to have fun!

Thank you Justin! I hope you don’t mind that I also mention that one of those inspiring people I’ve recently surrounded myself with is YOU.  I’m very excited for the project we recently worked on and the one were going to work on soon.

MONROE-LAND’S MODEL OF THE MONTH – TOSH YANEZ

Posted in Celebrity, Fun Stuff, Interview, Men, Model of the Month, MODELS, Monroe-land Mag with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on May 18, 2012 by monroeland

MONROE-LAND INTERVIEW WITH MODEL TOSH YANEZ

Justin Monroe: Describe yourself in three words?

Tosh Yanez:  Enthusiastic, Boyish and Creative

JM: What has been your most memorable photo shoot to date?

TY:  My most memorable shoot was a Donna Karen Campaign; which was professionally and personally ful-fulling. It was the shot that changed the direction of my career and life.

JM: What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever been asked to do and did?

TY: The craziest thing I’ve done on a shoot, was dressing up as a werewolf and peeing on Little Red Riding Hood; which was for your book! I love the picture of “Grandma” (Ester Goldberg) blowing me away with machine guns.

JM: What was your experience like shooting with Mert and Marcus?
TY:  Shooting with Mert and Marcus was an honor! I had been a fan of their work for years prior to the shoot. Not only are they brilliant artists, but they also have a great sense of humor and a unique way of making their set feel like family environment.
JM:  You have modeled along side some iconic people (Kate Moss, Pam Anderson). Who was your favorite person to work with on a photo shoot?
TY:  Kate Moss was one of my favorite model counterparts. She is one of the most iconic supermodels in history. I had a great time working with her. She would crack jokes with the crew all day and dance to ’80 music! She’s a huge Madonna fan and after the shoot she asked me to sing “Borderline” to her. I suck at singing but she still loved it!
JM: If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
TY: If I could change one thing about myself, it be my trait of being too nice to the wrong people.
JM: How did you get involved with the world of male modeling? Were you discovered and if so by whom?
TY:  I was discovered by the editor of Teen Magazine. She would often put me in her magazine’s editorials. She was the one that first encouraged me to go in and get an agent.

JM: What goes through your mind when you see these big advertisements with your image on them?

TY:    Its’ still very exciting for me. Whenever I see a billboard or magazine of myself I immediately want to show it to my parents! They love it. My mom has a whole collection of my magazines at home.

JM:  What are your beauty secrets to keep up with your appearance?

TY:   My beauty secret??? Dirty Martinis. haha, NO! I eat healthy and basically live at the gym. I’d like to get more sleep than I do though.

JM:  If you could have a dinner party with any three people dead or alive who would it be and why?

TY:   At my fantasy dinner party I’d invite Mozart, Marilyn Monroe and the Dali Lama. I’d like to think I have a bit of each one of them living in me.

JM:  What is the one thing you cannot live without?

TY:   The one thing I can’t live without, besides my Ipod, would be my parents! I have latino/Italian roots! We are all about Familia!

JM:  What kind of legacy would you like to leave behind?

TY:  I love the art and work that I have been a part of. I take pride in every image and project I’m a part of. I enjoy creating beautiful images with talented people. I love knowing that I can be a part of something that inspires people or even just help them escape from reality some times.

JM:   Favorite quote of all time?

TY:    “Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” – Dr. Seuss
